James N. Bourne, an old soldier of the Civil War and one of the prominent business men of Coatesville, Ind., was born at Mount Meriden, Putnam County, Ind., May 10, 1847, a son of William S. and Harriet (Vaughn) Bourne. He received a common education, and enlisted at Indianapolis, March 14, 1864, in Company A, Twenty-seventh Indiana Infantry, for three years or during the war, and was honorably discharged in August, 1865, on account of the cessation of the deadly strife. He was in the battles of Resaca, Cassville, New Hope Church, Kenesaw Mountain, Marietta, Peach Tree Creek and the siege of Atlanta, and with Sherman on his march to the sea, also on the return march to Washington, where he took part in the grand review; after Mr. Bourne returned home, he engaged in farming in Putnam County, and married there Savilda J., daughter of A.J. Hill, to which union seven children have been born: Everette, Maggie, Bertha, Martha, James A., Ralfo and Emmett. In 1873 Mr. Bourne engaged in the drug business in Coatesville, which he still follows. Fraternally he is a member of Coatesville lodge, No. 357, I.O.O.F., and has passed all the chairs, including noble grand. He is also a member of Applegate lodge, No. 155, F. & A.M., and of the G.A.R., John Layton post, No. 237, and has filled all the offices except commander. He votes the Republican ticket and held the office of postmaster of Coatesville from 1888 to 1892.
