This is an index to the enumerations of males over the age of 21 that were compiled by Hendricks County’s various township assessors in 1955.
NOTE: Unless "colored" is indicated in the Remarks column, all other entries were listed as white.
ABOUT THIS CENSUS: Beginning in 1830, Indiana passed laws requiring township officials to make an enumeration every 5 or 6 years of all males over the age of 21. Before 1877, the enumerations only included white males; beginning in 1877, colored males were also enumerated. These enumerations were to list the male’s first and last name and age, and were to be given to the county auditor when completed. The enumerations were used to help determine counties’ population for the purpose of allotting representation in the state legislature, and they also served as population estimates in between federal censuses.
