JAMES M. BARLOW

was born in Washington township Sept. 13th 1845. When he was two years old his parents moved to Lincoln township where he grew to manhood. He was the main dependence of his aged parents, being the eldest son. He enlisted in the 132nd regiment and was in the Cumberland army doing guard duty most of the time. He has a certificate of thanks for services during the Atlanta campaign signed by Pres. Lincoln and Secretary Stanton. After the war he attended the Danville Academy and Wabash College. He was a teacher twelve years, farming or traveling during vacation. He commenced to farm in Lincoln township. Then he moved to Brown and in 1884 to his present farm in Washington township to which he as added acres and improvements until it is one of the best farms in the county. He is a staunch Republican and has been one of the workers since boyhood. He was committeeman in Brown township twelve years, doing hard service in a part of the county where Republicans were scarce and hardships many. In 1896 he was elected to the legislature where he served his county well.
