Republican candidates for county offices:

GEORGE A. GUTHRIE

was born in a log cabin in Decatur county, in 1835. His father was born in Jefferson county, Indiana, in 1813, Mr. Guthrie thus being the son of a native Hoosier—something remarkable for one of his age. He lived in Decatur county until he reached his majority, attending the schools of that day. He taught the first school under the present school laws in his home district and received for his service sixty dollars for sixty days' work. In 1857, he settled in this county, three miles west of Danville, and has since lived in this county with the exception of two short intervals spent in Boone county. His first vote was cast for Gen. Fremont and in that campaign Mr. Guthrie took a great interest, marshalling the first campaign wagon with sixty boys in it. He has attended all the county and state conventions and several national conventions.
