Divorce Notice for Andrew Bales and Lucretia N. (Robinson) Bales

from The Republican (Danville, Indiana)—issue of Thursday, April 12, 1923—page 1, column 6:

Echo of North Salem Shooting Affair in 1921

Because her husband, Andrew Bales, is serving sentence in prison for assault and battery with intent to commit murder, Lucretia N. Bales asks for a divorce and the restoration of her maiden name, Lucretia Robinson.

The suit recalls the assault in North Salem by Andrew Bales upon Richard Somerville in August, 1921. Bales and his wife had had trouble. One morning in August, Bales started out to find Somerville and when they met Bales fired one shot at him with a revolver. Then Bales went home and secured a shot-gun. He found Somerville in a store where he worked. Bales fired at him through the door. Some of the shot hit Somerville, who fell. Bales fired a second shot with little effect. Bales hid in a corn field until he was induced by a relative to surrender. After a few days in jail he was released on bond until his trial in December, when he was sentenced to prison for from two to fourteen years. Somerville and Bales are both over 70 years old.
