Divorce Notice for John Bunten and Rebecca Bunten

from The Republican (Danville, Indiana)—issue of Thursday, September 29, 1898—page 5, columns 5-6:

Bunten vs. Bunten

John A. Bunten who last week was declared of sound mind has filed suit for divorce from his wife [Rebecca Bunten]. They were married in the fifties and, it is alleged, lived together until 1880. Eleven children were born to them. It is alleged that in 1880 the defendant treated the plaintiff in an inhuman manner and has since not performed the reasonable duties of a wife, that at divers [sic] times she has left plaintiff's home and remained away twelve months, that she has called plaintiff vile names and struck him, that for ten years when seated around the family table the defendant has refused to pass food to the plaintiff and when men were employed on the farm she has refused to cook for them although able to do so, that defendant has accused plaintiff of being crazy and of being unfaithful. Plaintiff wants a divorce and the custody of the two minor children.

Divorce Granted

The divorce case of John H. Bunten against his wife was decided in the Putnam circuit court Friday, Bunten being granted a divorce, but his wife receiving $2,400 alimony. The case has attracted much attention in Danville and Marion township.
