Divorce Notice for Samuel U. Daugherty and Edna O. (Kirk) Daugherty

from The Republican (Danville, Indiana)—issue of Thursday, July 29, 1920—page 1, column 3:

SUIT FOR DIVORCE DAMAGES ALSO ASKED
Edna O. Daugherty Wants $30,000 Total in Two Cases

Edna O. Daugherty has sued for a divorce from Samuel U. Daugherty, asking also for $10,000 alimony and the assumption of her maiden name, Edna O. Kirk.

She also, by her next friend, Henry T. Kirk, has filed suit against William E. Daugherty and Stella Daugherty, husband and wife, parents of Samuel U. Daugherty, her husband. She asks $20,000 damages for alleged alienation by them of her husband's affections.

Samuel U. Daugherty and Edna O. Daugherty were married March 8, 1917 and it is alleged they separated June 6, 1920. The complaint in the divorce suit alleges that the defendant during the whole of their married life has failed and refused to make reasonable and comfortable support for his wife; that he has called her vile names and otherwise treated her in a cruel and inhuman manner; that defendant during most of their married life has been in the habit of associating with women of questionable character and would frequently boastingly tell plaintiff of this; that night after night he would be out auto-riding with such women and girls; that because of this, plaintiff became sick in body and mind and to protect herself and to maintain her self-respect she was compelled to leave defendant and go to the home of relatives for protection.

Plaintiff alleges that defendant is physically able to work, that he is the only child and sole prospective heir of his parents whose estate is of the probable value of $75,000. Plaintiff asks a divorce, the restoration of her maiden name and $10,000 alimony.

In the suit against William E. and Stella Daugherty, plaintiff alleges that Samuel U. Daugherty is the only child of defendants who possess an unusual degree of influence, power and control over their son and can induce their son to comply with their wishes; that after her marriage, on account of defendants' influence over their son, plaintiff's husband, her husband refused to provide a separate home and plaintiff and husband were required and compelled to live with defendants as members of their family; that defendants, soon after plaintiff's marriage, and for the purpose and with the wrong and malicious intention of causing a separation of their son and plaintiff, began by words, acts and deeds to insult, abuse and mistreat plaintiff in the presence of their son, and defendants did wrongfully and maliciously contrive and conspire with the intention to injure the plaintiff, and to cause a separation between plaintiff and their son, persuade, influence, request encourage and induce Samuel U. Daugherty to treat plaintiff in such a cruel, brutal and inhuman manner that she became sick in body and mind and that on June 6, 1920, plaintiff was compelled to cease living with her husband.

Plaintiff alleges that said wrongful acts were for the purpose of bringing about a separation and of injuring plaintiff and of depriving her of the comfort, society, protection and support of her husband; that defendants did purposely, willfully, wrongfully and maliciously alienate the affections of plaintiff's husband and did by their continuous threats, influence, persuasion and inducements made to Samuel U. Daugherty influence him so cruelly and inhumanly to treat plaintiff with the intention of compelling plaintiff to leave the home of her husband, whose only house and place of abode was with the defendants, and go to the home of relatives and friends; that defendants did induce Samuel U. Daugherty to abandon plaintiff as his wife; that since June 6, 1920, defendants have detained and harbored Samuel U. Daugherty and induced him to live and remain in defendants' home and remain away from plaintiff and to make no provisions for plaintiff's support.

Judgment against defendants for $20,000 is asked.
