Divorce Notice for Benson Eggers and Myrtle (Harris) Eggers

from The Republican (Danville, Indiana)—issue of Thursday, January 27, 1898—page 1, column 6:

Deserted

Benson Eggers, formerly of Groveland but who now resides at North Salem, is without a wife. Eggers is only 18 years of age but his matrimonial career is a record breaker. The first wife tired of his beatings, the second one left him and instituted suit for divorce at Terre Haute. Before the suit for divorce was even filed, Eggers married his third wife [Myrtle Harris] at North Salem. The third one hearing of her husband's former matrimonial troubles through the newspapers has also left him, and has gone back to her parents. Eggers is also in a peck of trouble over a land deal. The second wife's attorney is now in North Salem, investigating more fully into the title of the young man to the land which he not long ago deeded to his brother. The transfer was hardly legal, as his second wife was not a party to it. It is proposed to make Eggers pay heavy alimony—Greencastle Democrat.

The above article does Mr. Eggers some injustice. It is true that although only eighteen years of age he has had a varied matrimonial experience. His first wife left him in a few days after marriage and a divorce followed. His second wife left him and after he made diligent search for her he was, as he thought, reliably informed that she was dead. So he married a third wife. A few days ago, he was given notice that his second wife had filed suit against him for divorce at Terre Haute. Tuesday he filed a petition in this court to have his last marriage declared void. This has been done and Mr. Eggers will attend the divorce case. It is understood that when this divorce is granted that he and his third wife will marry again.
