Divorce Notice for Gaylord P. Foster and Madelyn I. (Hicks) Foster

from The Republican (Danville, Indiana)—issue of Thursday, December 14, 1916—page 1, column 2:

ANOTHER ILLINOIS MARRIAGE ENDS IN LOCAL DIVORCE COURT

Sorry Story Told By Former Stilesville High School Girl

When Miss Madelyn I. Hicks, a member of the Senior class in the Stilesville high school, left the building on Friday evening, Jan. 21, 1915, she knew that her school days were over. The next morning she went to Indianapolis where she met Gaylord P. Foster, of Cloverdale, and they went to Paris, Ill., to be married.

Her complaint is now on file in the Circuit court for divorce and between the lines can be read the story of another of those ill-fated runaway marriages.

She alleges they were married in Paris, Jan. 22, 1915 and lived in Cloverdale until June 5, 1916 when they separated. On that day, he took her to her father's house in Stilesville and told her to stay there, that he never intended to live with her again and from that day she has not seen him or heard anything from him.

She alleges further, that he failed to support her; that food had to be provided by her parents and his parents; that he gave her no clothing whatever; that he called her vile names, cursed her and threatened her with physical violence; that he often told her to go back to her father; that he had no use for her; that he was not going to live with her and if she did not go to her father's, she would have to take care of herself; that he was frequently gone all night; that she was afraid to stay alone and would beg him not to leave her and he would curse her.

A child was born to them in March but the child lived only sixteen days. Plaintiff wishes her maiden name, Madelyn I. Hicks, restored.
