from the Danville Gazette (Danville, Indiana)--issue of March 4, 1920—page 1, column 2:

WITH BOOTS ON
Jessie Phillips Says Husband Wore Brogans to Bed and Kicked Her Out—Wants Divorce

Alleging that her husband, Alva Phillips, of Lincoln township, refused to take off his shoes when he went to bed, and that when she remonstrated he booted her out of bed and then choked her, Mrs. Jessie Phillips asks for a divorce.

Plaintiff alleges that her husband has a violet and ungovernable temper, and that she suffers therefrom. Besides kicking her out of bed, he also frequently struck her with his fist, she alleges, and on occasions, had choked her until she was insensible.

She alleges that her husband refused to provide for her and forced her to work out to make a living. When things did not go right he cursed her and called her vile names. She says her health suffered as a result of the treatment she received.

The couple were married July 8, 1918, and separated Feb. 17, 1920.
