Divorce Notice for George William Shelton and Cora H. Shelton

from The Republican (Danville, Indiana)—issue of Thursday, June 5, 1919—page 1, column 5:

MANY YEARS' CRUELTY ALLEGED BY PLAINTIFF
Mrs. Shelton Wants A Divorce From Geo. William Shelton

Mrs. Cora H. Shelton asks for a divorce from her husband, Geo. William Shelton, the well known smith, the suit making quite a stir in Danville social circles.

They were married in February, 1891, and separated this year, no date being given. Plaintiff alleges that he wholly neglected and failed to keep obligations to plaintiff; that for many years his conduct has been exceedingly cruel and inhuman; that he has a violent and ungovernable temper and for years has been in the habit of becoming angry at plaintiff without reasonable cause and when angry he would curse and abuse plaintiff in the most violent manner; that he would frequently assault and beat her and cause her great physical pain and mental anguish; that he would become insanely jealous without cause or reason and would call plaintiff vile names and make false and unjust charges against her, all of which he knew to be false and which he would admit to be false when his fits of anger and jealousy would pass.

Plaintiff says that because of her pride and to avoid the humiliation and mortification that would result from relatives and friends learning of defendant's conduct and his abuse and treatment of her, she has for years concealed these things as far as she possibly could, and notwithstanding defendant's treatment, she continued to live with him for over 28 years, always hoping that he might change his actions and keep some of the promises he made to her from time to time. She alleges that by reason of these long years of abuse, her health has broken and she is no longer able to endure his abusive conduct.

She alleges that by reason of their joint labor and saving, they have property amounting to $8,000 or $10,000. She wants a divorce and $5,000 alimony.

A restraining order has been issued, forbidding defendant from disposing of his property, and forbidding the First National Bank to cash any checks on any money defendant may have on deposit there.
