Divorce Notice for John H. Stevens and Ida M. Stevens

from The Republican (Danville, Indiana)—issue of Thursday, December 14, 1922—page 1, column 3:

DIVORCE AND ALIMONY ASKED BY MRS. STEVENS

Ida M. Stevens wants a divorce from John H. Stevens. They were married March 6, 1887, and ceased to live as husband and wife in 1920, but they occupied the same house until Oct. 15, 1921, when they separated. She alleges that defendant for twelve years has failed and refused to make necessary provisions for plaintiff and she has been compelled to take employment away from home and she has been employed as agent for the American Express Company and has been required to support herself and contribute to the support of the family; that defendant is of violent temper and disposition and has cursed and abused plaintiff in an unbearable manner for many years; that as he grows older, he appears to grow worse in the use of profane and vile language; that on Oct. 15, 1921, he cursed her and ordered her to leave home, and she did leave and since that time has lived with her son, Burnham; that she is still the agent for the express company; that defendant is the carrier for the company; that this business relation brings them together in a business way; that at times when he is at her office, both when alone and in the presence of strangers, he cursed her, calls her vile names and makes false charges against her.

Plaintiff alleges that the treatment has become unbearable, that it has caused her to become sick and nervous; that eight children have been born to them, four of whom are living and of age, four having died.

Plaintiff alleges that she inherited from her mother's estate $500, which the defendant used and has never given her any part of it; that he owns property worth $3,000. Plaintiff asks $2,000 alimony.
