from The Republican (Danville, Indiana)—issue of Thursday, August 12, 1920—page 1, column 6:

ALLEGES GROSS CRUELTY IN HER SUIT FOR DIVORCE
Mrs. Eva H. Thompson Files Papers Against Nathan Thompson

Asking for a divorce, the custody of their three children, $10,000 alimony, an allowance for the support of the children and an order whereby defendant be restrained and enjoined from molesting or disturbing plaintiff or disposing of any of his property and that defendant be required to pay plaintiff a sufficient sum for the support of plaintiff and children, Eva Hoadley Thompson has filed suit against Nathan Thompson.

Plaintiff alleges cruel and inhuman treatment in word and deed, that defendant called her vile names, that he has a violent and ungovernable temper and quarrelsome disposition and each day while plaintiff was working about her household duties he would take his position near her and malign, abuse and curse defendant's family, that he falsely accused her of infidelity, that he refused to take her into society, that during their first three years of residence upon the farm, plaintiff was unable to go into town but twice, that defendant refused to provide a way for plaintiff to go any place by herself and she has been compelled to walk five and six miles to town.

Plaintiff alleges that he failed to provide her and children with suitable clothing, that he gave her the charge of butter, cream and egg money, but compelled her to use it for the support of the table and that by reason of this fact, she has not had the privilege of spending money upon her own clothing, that defendant refused to provide clothing for the children who have been compelled to go ragged and dirty.

Plaintiff alleges that defendant has mistreated and abused her children by a former marriage and they are unable to come to the home of plaintiff for any extended visits, that he has abused his own children and so cruelly treated them that he has driven one away from home and in the presence of those remaining, especially the daughter, he is in the habit of using vile language, all to the great humiliation of plaintiff and the detriment of the children.

Plaintiff alleges that on one occasion he kicked her and several times attempted to push her upon the stove, that once when she was about to make a trip with her brother, he expressed the desire that they would all meet with death and “go to hell,” that defendant is unsanitary and so careless about his person that he is a disgrace to plaintiff and her family, that plaintiff has been made weak, nervous, has suffered mental anguish and has been seriously injured in her health, mind and body.

Plaintiff says she has entreated him even though he bore no affection for her, to live in peace and make a comfortable and pleasant home for their children but he has refused.

Three children have been born to them and plaintiff asks to have the custody of them.

Plaintiff says defendant owns personal property to the value of $25,000. She owns household goods on the farm and she asks the Court to quiet the title to them in her.

She alleges that she is afraid he will do her bodily harm, that he has always kept his business affairs secret from her. They were married June 16, 1901 and separated Aug. 6, 1920.
