Son of Charles E. and Alice C. Kurtz; born March 9, 1898, North Salem, Hendricks County, Ind. College student; farmer. Enlisted in U.S. Marine Corps, June 18, 1918, Indianapolis, Ind. Sent to Parris Island, S.C.; assigned to Company B, 13th Regiment, U.S. Marines. Transferred to Quantico, Va. Embarked September 13, 1918. Became ill on board ship; taken to Base Hospital No. 2, Brest, France, where he died of spinal meningitis, September 30, 1918. Buried in Kerfautras Cemetery, Brest, France.
