Sent to Camp Jackson, S.C.; assigned to Battery F, 317th Field Artillery, 81st Division. Embarked from Camp Mills, N.Y., August 8, 1918. Died of bronchial pneumonia October 4, 1918, Vadahun, France. Survived by widow, Elsie Sutherly, and son, Joseph Russell Sutherly.
