from The Republican (Danville, Indiana)--issue of Thursday, January 21, 1904—page 1, column 5:

A GOOD CITIZEN GONE
T.A.H. Biddle Passes To His Long Home

Tilghman Asher Howard Biddle, a prominent citizen of Danville, died at his home Saturday evening from a stroke of apoplexy. The funeral was Monday afternoon and the large attendance was proof of the high esteem in which he was held.

He was born April 19, 1843 near New Maysville. He was one of a family of thirteen children, of ten boys of three girls, of whom there now survive—James T. Biddle, of Silverwood, Ind., Judge William B. Biddle, of La Porte, Ind.; Abram J. Biddle, of Beaumount, Texas; Dr. George A. Biddle, of Emporia, Kansas; Dr. Thomas C. Biddle, of Topeka, Kansas. He received his early education in the common schools and developed into a man of strong character and high sense of duty. Fired with the spirit of true patriotism, he enlisted in the war for the Union for ninety days in the 78th regiment and again in the six months' service in the 115th and again for three years' service in the 11th regiment. He served in all these enlistments as a good soldier and a loyal man. Fearless of danger, strong in mind and body, he was quick to see the right in war and in peace and to act as his conscience dictated. Considerate of the rights of others and giving expression to his convictions in quick acts of kindness and in simple deeds of love, he gathered about him a circle of friends who appreciated his character and revere his memory.

He was married June 3, 1873, to Sarah J. Fordyce. Two children were born to them, a daughter, Maude M., and a son, Richard, who departed this life Feb. 13, 1891. He came to Danville in 1882 and embarked in mercantile pursuits, served six years as township trustee, several terms as a member of the town board and was an active and valuable citizen. He was a member of the M.E. church, having joined the Danville church by letter Nov. 30, 1884.

A devoted husband, a loving father, a fast friend, a loyal citizen, a brave soldier, he has left a record of a well spent life.
