Obituary for James N. Bourne

from The Republican (Danville, Indiana)--issue of Thursday, March 8, 1906—page 1, column 5:

SUDDEN DEATH
Passing of Well Known Citizen of Hendricks County

James N. Bourne, of Coatesville, was found dead in bed at a Martinsville sanitarium Friday morning. He had gone to Martinsville for his health which had apparently improved. Thursday night he retired, his attendants offering to stay up with him. He thought it not necessary and during the night he passed away. He had been in poor health for many months, suffering greatly. His age was 58 years, 7 months, 22 days.

He was the son of William and Harriet Bourne and was born in Putnam county, May 10, 1847. He and Serelda J. Hill were married Sept. 1, 1869. Seven children were born to them, three of whom have died. The widow whose hands were never too weary to administer to his every want, with two loving daughters, Mrs. Wilbur Masten and Mrs. Ullen Rogers and two dutiful sons survives. There are also a grandson, little James, whose home is in Texas; a granddaughter, little Helen; two brothers, two sisters, a host of relatives and friends to mourn his loss.

He was a soldier in the famous 27th Indiana regiment in the war for the union, serving three years, being one of the youngest of those who answered their country's call. He united with the Union Valley Baptist church in 1869 and continued a member until his death. The community has lost a large hearted and highly esteemed citizen, the church a benefactor. The funeral was Sunday at Coatesville under the auspices of the Masons, Odd Fellows and G.A.R.
