from The Republican (Danville, Hendricks County, Indiana)--issue of Thursday, July 19, 1900—page 1, column 6:

Death of Mrs. Brown

Mrs. Martha Brown, widow of Joseph Brown, died at her home on South Jefferson street, Tuesday night, after a lingering illness. She was taken ill at the beginning of the past winter with heart disease and has been sick ever since. During the past few months she has been a sufferer from dropsy and this was the immediate cause of her death. Mrs. Brown was seventy-seven years old, she having been born May 14th, 1823, near Mooresville. Together with her husband she removed to Danville many years before the civil war. They resided on the old home place north-west of town until Mr. Brown's death which occurred in September, 1897. She then removed to the home of her son, L.H. Brown, on South Jefferson street, where she resided until her death. Mrs. Brown was a member of the Christian church, she having jointed the denomination many years ago. The funeral services were held at her late home and were conducted by Revs. Martin and Brewer. The interment was in the east cemetery.
