Obituary for James Gregg

from The Republican (Danville, Indiana)--issue of Thursday, June 18, 1903—page 1, column 6:

A Dark Chapter

Brownsburg has had some sad events within the week. James Gregg is dead by his own hand. Lyda McNelly, a seventeen-year-old girl, is a childless mother. When it was rumored about the town that Miss McNelly was in a delicate condition, the public tongue began to wag and James Gregg, the girl's step-father was, in the public mind, convicted of being responsible for her condition. He was accused of striving to get the girl to prefer paternity charges against others and also that he treated her so roughly that she gave premature birth to her child. Gregg took poison and died but left a note stating he was innocent of the crime laid to him by gossip.
