Obituary for Addison Hadley

from The Republican (Danville, Hendricks County, Indiana)--issue of Thursday, March 7, 1901--page 4, columns 2-3:

ADDISON HADLEY DEAD
The Founder of the Hadley Home Passes Away

Addison Hadley, founder of the Hadley Industrial Home, died Saturday at his home near Hadley. He had not been well for some time and the immediate cause of death was heart disease. The funeral was Monday afternoon at the church. Many members of the W.C.T.U. attended.

Mr. Hadley was seventy years old. He was born in North Carolina, and early in life came to Indiana and settled on a farm west of Danville. He prospered, and about eleven years ago decided to establish a home for girls. His plans were laid before the Woman's Christian Temperance Union of the state, with the request that the Union assume the management of such a home. The proposition was gladly accepted, and Mr. Hadley and his wife deeded over to the W.C.T.U. a splendid farm with adequate buildings.

From time to time Mr. Hadley has added to the improvements of the home until it is now regarded as one of the most complete and commodious homes of the kind in the country. The official name of the institution is the Hadley Industrial School for Girls. Girls with no place to turn to are received there, taught how to earn a livelihood and kept until places may be found for them. Thirty girls are now in the home.

Mr. Hadley had a great deal of property left after his gift to the W.C.T.U., and it is pretty well understood that, after his wife has been provided for, his property will go to the institution he established. Mrs. Hadley has been in sympathy with all that has been done for homeless girls, and friends say that it is her wish that the property shall eventually go to the home. Mr. and Mrs. Hadley did not leave any children. Mr. Hadley and his wife are members of the Friends church.
