FORMER LOCAL MAN IS FOUND SHOT TO DEATH

Friend W. Hayworth, 72, of Brownsburg formerly of Montgomery County, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound early Wednesday afternoon about 10 miles southwest of Crawfordsville.

The body was found by Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Sayler of near New Market, who were en route to Browns Valley. It was lying in a ditch beside his car a half-mile west of the Pennsylvania railroad on Ind. 234 between U.S. 231 and Ind. 17. A 12-gauge shotgun lay on the ground between the car and the body. The Saylers said it was 1:15 p.m. when they discovered the body. Gresham Willet, Rt. 1, Lodoga, said he had passed the spot at 12:45 p.m. and there was no auto there at that time.

The sherriff's office and coroner were called. Dr. Fred Blix, Montgomery County coroner, said death was caused by a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The charge had struck Mr. Hayworth in the chest near the heart.

Identification was made from the drivers license and a note found in the car asked that the body be taken to the Noble Reeves Funeral Home at New Market. Mr. Hayworth had been in poor health for several years, according to the family. A native of near Columbus, Ind., he was born Nov. 28, 1884, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Alex Hayworth. He was married to Edna Phillips of Brownsburg, who survives.

Mr. Hayworth was a carpenter, and was a member of the Brownsburg Christian Church. He formerly lived in Russellville and Crawfordsville.

Surviving besides the widow are two sons, Paul of Crawfordsville and Woodrow of St. Louis: two daughters, Mrs. Frances Parish of St. Louis and Patty Ann Hayworth: two sisters, Mrs. Mary Clements of Grayling, Mich., and Mrs. Sarah Prasser of Crawfordsville; a half-sister, Mrs. Claude Marr of Columbus, Ind., 12 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Mrs. Carrie Martin of Crawfordsville, and a brother who died in infancy.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. (CDT) Saturday at the Jones and Matthew Funeral Home in Brownsburg, with burial at Edinburg, Ind. The body was taken from New Market to the funeral home in Brownsburg, where friends may call after 7 p.m. Thursday.
