Obituary for Amanda Hodges

from The Republican (Danville, Indiana)--issue of Thursday, November 5, 1903—page 1, column 4:

Amanda Hodges was born in Tennessee April 9, 1821, and died September 26, 1903, aged 82 years, 5 months and 8 days. She was the daughter of William and Elizabeth Hodges. She came with her parents to Indiana in 1831 and has always lived in the community where she died. When seventeen years of age, she professed faith in Christ and united with the Cumberland Presbyterian church. In 1866 she united with the Amo Baptist church and was baptized by Rev. F.D. Bland. When health permitted, she was punctual in her attendance at all religious services. In private conversation and general demeanor she ever evinced a tender Christian spirit, always having a cheerful and pleasant greeting for all those with whom she came in contact. The kindly ministrations of her brothers and sisters to her special needs was a source of great satisfaction to her in her last lingering illness. The closing up of her earthly race was attended with much suffering yet she never murmered [sic] or complained, feeling that when the door of death opened, she would enter upon an eternal rest. When death did come, it was peaceful and serene as one gently passing into a gentle sleep. The sorrowing brothers and sisters have lost a kind and loving sister, the church and community one who has showed friendship for all, but she left the assurance that their loss was her eternal gain. She was the oldest of a family of fifteen, nine of whom are living—three brothers and six sisters. Two brothers and four sisters were pall bearers. We sorrow not as those who have no hope. The funeral discourse was by Rev. R. Harvey.
