Obituary for Samuel V. Hollingsworth

from The Republican (Danville, Indiana)--issue of Thursday, November 19, 1903—page 1, column 5:

Samuel V. Hollingsworth, whose death occured [sic] Nov. 6, was one of Hendricks county's esteemed and useful citizens. He was born in Clinton county, Ohio, April 7, 1824. When very young he came with his parents, John and Elizabeth Hollingsworth, to Indiana and settled north of Plainfield. In 1845 he was married to Lydia Mullen who died twenty years ago. Seven children were born to them, four of whom are living—William A. and Charles D., Mrs. Alfred S. Lininger and Mrs. James W. Smith. A sister, Mrs. W.R. Craven, of Clayton, and a brother, Joseph Hollingsworth, of Crown Center, survive. There are thirteen grandchildren. Though of Quaker parentage, he became a Methodist in 1861 and it was largely through his influence that Bartlett's chapel was built. In the church, in the home and among his neighbors he was a great counsellor [sic], being always a diligent student and a hard worker. His hatred of hypocrisy caused him to utter his sentiments with great frankness. He was a man of rare determination and threw his energy into whatever he had to perform. His worthy principles, cheerful temperament and dignified composure under trying circumstances were marks of a superior character. In pioneer days, his ability to invent and make implements for the farm enabled him to be of great assistance to the community. During the whole of his long life he was most charitable and kind.
