Obituary for Samuel A. Long

from The Republican (Danville, Hendricks County, Indiana)--issue of Thursday, June 14, 1900—page 1, column 5:

Death of Samuel A. Long

Samuel A. Long, a pioneer citizen of Marion township, died Monday morning of a general breaking down of the system. He was a native of Virginia, where he was born September 25, 1823. He came to Indiana in the fall of 1834. His parents settled in Marion township and here the remainder of his life was spent. July 29, 1851, he and Mildred Haggard were married. To them were born seven children, of whom four are living—Preston, Mrs. Bessie Howell, Rev. Morton C. Long and Mrs. Laura Dooley. The funeral was yesterday morning from his late home, the services being conducted by Rev. Prather.

Mr. Long was a member of the regular Presbyterian church at New Winchester. After that organization disbanded he did not unite with any church, but he continued to live the manly, upright life that ever characterized him, at peace with all. He was one of the best citizens of the county and will be greatly missed in the community where he so long lived.
