Obituary for Rebecca Lowenstein

from The Republican (Danville, Hendricks County, Indiana)--issue of Thursday, July 19, 1900—page 1, column 6:

Death of Mrs. Lowenstein

The Register, published at Whitehall, Illinois, where the remains of Mrs. Lowenstein were taken for burial, says of her:

“Rebecca Dempsey was born in Kentucky Oct. 18, 1859, and was brought when a babe by her parents, Robert and Elizabeth Dempsey, to Danville, Indiana, where she grew to womanhood, uniting early in life with the Christian church. She became a school teacher and while engaged in her profession in Kansas City, Missouri, she met H.P. Lowenstein, to whom she was married July 2nd, 1891, at 305 East 14th street. In November they purchased residence number 2028 Olive street, which remained their home, and where she passed away at 10:30 o'clock Saturday morning, July 7, after a brief illness. Mrs. Lowenstein had grip last spring but apparently regained her health. One week before her death she was troubled with obstruction of the bowels terminating in peritonitis. A physician was called and the difficulty seemed to pass away but on Friday she was seized again, the physician called and also a consulting physician; she seemed to get some better, but Mr. Lowenstein was informed that if any relatives were desired present he had better wire them. This was Saturday morning and while he was sending messages to kindred she passed away. The remains arrived here on 4:10 pm C. & A. train Sunday, and were conveyed to the home of Mrs. Elizabeth A. Lowenstein, where funeral services were conducted at 3:30 Monday afternoon.”
