Obituary for Cyrus Masten

from The Republican (Danville, Indiana)--issue of Thursday, January 28, 1904—page 1, column 5:

Cyrus Masten, the son of John and Sarah Masten, was born Dec. 2, 1835. He was married to Silva E. Snoddy, May 27, 1858. To this union were born three children—Roxy, Carrie and Fay. The daughters have preceded him to the world beyond.

For nine years Cyrus Masten has been afflicted and his sufferings at intervals were almost unbearable, but with indomitable will power he refused to give up, and when a little better, would be seen attending to his affairs and taking a cheerful interest in the world around him. But at last Death triumphed and he passed away Jan. 16 just before dawn of day, aged 68 years, one month and fourteen days. He was conscious almost to the last hour, and knew and welcomed his relatives and friends who came to his bedside. He realized that death was near and welcomed its approach saying that he wished to die.

He has lived his long life within a few miles of where he was born and was held in high esteem by all who knew him. A good neighbor, who was always ready to help the poor and oppressed, helpful in sickness, honest and upright with all men, there was much in his life that younger men [would] do well to emulate. And better than all, he was a kind husband and father.

He leaves behind him the wife of his youth who for months and years of his unspeakable sufferings never left his side but with undaunted coverage did all she could to alleviate them; an only son, Fay, who though he mourns the loss of a dear father has the consolation of knowing that he gave him obedience in all things and never grieved his father's heart by not following his counsels. His son's wife was also a daughter indeed, who was ever ready to aid in caring for him in any way she could.

He also leaves one grandchild, little May, who was one of the greatest comforts of his life, and whom he desired near him at the last, and adopted granddaughter, Edna, whom he loved as one of his own. Besides those near and dear ones are one living sisters, and six brothers and hosts of other relatives and friends who will greatly miss him from their midst. The funeral services of reading and prayer were conducted Monday at 10 o'clock by Rev. Brewer, of Hall, at the home with interment at Amo.
