Obituary for Horacena (Towles) McCoun

from The Republican (Danville, Hendricks County, Indiana)--issue of Thursday, June 7, 1900—page 4, column 4:

Death of Mrs. McCoun

Mrs. Horacena Towles McCoun died at her home in Danville Monday morning of cancer after months of suffering. “Aunt Horace” as she was known, was born in Kentucky, September 5, 1824, and in 1840 she and John S. McCoun were married. In 1841 they came to Danville where they lived until Mr. McCoun's death which occurred in October 1844. Two children were born to them—Mrs. Harlan Hadley and Mrs. J.L. McCoun. In 1847 she and R.C.S. McCoun were married and to them were born eleven children, nine of whom are living—James, Raleigh, Edward, Jerry, Oliver, Mrs. Mary Scearce, Mrs. Sallie Shirley, [and] Mrs. Eliza McVey. They were all with her at the time of her death except Raleigh. For many years she and “Uncle Bob” lived on the farm just north of town. In March, 1886, he died, and in a few years she moved to town. Aunt Horace was one of the good pioneer women and mothers. Before the day of railroads she made two or three trips to Kentucky, going and coming on horseback. She was a noble Christian woman whose good deeds will long live. The funeral is this morning from her late home, the service being conducted by Rev. Martin.
