Obituary for Narcissus (Wilson) McPhetridge

from The Republican (Danville, Indiana)--issue of Thursday, December 12, 1912—page 5, column 4:

MRS. McPHETRIDGE
Her Body Found This Morning In Its Last Sleep

Mrs. Narcissus Wilson McPhetridge was found dead in bed this morning at her home on West Main street by her daughter, Mrs. Dora Crabb. Mrs. Crabb came down stairs this morning about six o'clock and noticed that the room occupied by her mother was cold. It was the custom of Mrs. McPhetridge to turn on the heat and then return to her bed until the room was warm. Mrs. Crabb looked to her mother's bed and found she had passed away. She lay as if asleep and the cause of death was undoubtedly apoplexy. Her age was 85. Her husband, William H. McPhetridge, died in March 1896.

The news of the death of “Aunt Norris” soon spread over town and many were the expressions of grief. She had an unusually wide circle of loving friends. She carried into age the warmth of affection and the vivacity of youth and in any social circle, she was always surrounded by many eager to enjoy her bright comment.

In the home circle, she was the ideal mother, the center of a group of adult children—J.M. McPhetridge, Mrs. Dora Crabb, Mrs. O.M. Piersol and Lannes McPhetridge—who idolized her. Cordial hospitality always marked that home and here friends were always glad to go. The hearth-fire's glow cheered all who came within its rays.

No greater praise can be said of Mrs. McPhetridge than that she added to the joy of living. With good counsel, she guided her children. Always looking for the silver lining in the cloud, she gave comfort to her friends. Many men and women of today will recall with pleasure the happy childhood hours spent at her home.

So she increased the sum of human happiness and in her honor many a tear will fall for her and the days that are gone.

A consistent member of the Christian church, she passed to her long home, no doubt as she herself would have preferred to have gone.

The funeral will be Sunday afternoon at 2:15 from the Christian church.
