MISS MAE MERRITT DIES AT HOME NORTH OF AVON
Had Taught Public Schools for Forty-two Years

Miss Mae Merritt, age 67, died following a short illness from heart trouble, Friday evening, at the Merritt home, north of Avon. She had been in failing health for several months, and suffered a heart attack the Sunday before her death.

Born in the home where she died, she was the daughter of William and Abigail (Shipman) Merritt. She attended the Avon grade school and Plainfield Academy and began teaching school at the age of sixteen.

Miss Merritt taught her first three years in Hendricks county and then taught in the Connersville city schools for thirty-nine years. For thirty-eight years she had taught the primary grade in the same room. She also attended State Teachers college.

Miss Merritt was a member of the Coterie at Connersville and was active in The American Legion Auxiliary, having attended several national conventions as district delegate. She was a member of the Avon Methodist church.

Surviving are a brother, William G. Merritt, of near Avon; five nieces and nephews, Mrs. Arthur Craven, of Indianapolis; Mrs. Mary Merritt Simpson of East Springfield, Ohio; Barbara and Bertha Merritt and William G. Merritt, Jr. A sister, Mrs. Bertha Casey of Indianapolis, died in 1942.

Funeral services were held, Monday afternoon at the Rushton & Hampton Funeral home in Plainfield, in charge of the Rev. Lewis Bradford, pastor of the Avon Methodist church. Burial was at Plainfield.
