Obituary for Lucy D. Miles

from The Republican (Danville, Indiana)--issue of Thursday, September 28, 1905—page 1, column 5:

DROWNED
Beautiful Girl Meets Sad Death at Broad Ripple

Again the shadow of death by accident has cast its gloom over this community. Sunday, Miss Lucy D. Miles, sixteen-year-old daughter of Ethan Miles and wife, was drowned at Broad Ripple. She and her sweetheart had been boating in the afternoon and after supper returned to their canoe. In the darkness, others heard a cry for help and they hurried to the place where the cries were heard. Only an overturned canoe and some cushions were found. The water was not yet calm showing there had been a struggle. Searching parties in the darkness could find nothing more and the next morning the work was resumed and two bodies were found, those of Willis Bonham and Miss Miles.

Miss Miles lived for many years in Danville and was a beautiful girl, beloved by all who knew her.

The remains were brought to the home of Rev. Sherrill in Danville, yesterday noon, and after short services were interred in the South cemetery.
