Obituary for Thomas D. Murphy

from The Republican (Danville, Indiana)--issue of Thursday, April 27, 1911—page 1, column 4:

THOMAS D. MURPHY MURDERED

Thomas D. Murphy was foully murdered in a Mexican mining camp April 2. His wife was Miss Kate Nave, born in Danville, a daughter of the late Addison C. Nave. She and a son six years old survive. The Guadalajara, Mexico, Times tells of the tragedy. Two Mexican brothers, Carlos Cervantes and Macario Cervantes, both drunk, attempted to shoot up the camp. Murphy attempted to quiet them and Carlos shot him twice, once through the heart and again through the head, either shot being fatal. A posse organized immediately and killed Macario who had struck Murphy with his machete either as he fell or after he fell, mutilating his face. Carlos escaped to the mountains where he is sought. Murphy's body was buried in Mexico. Mrs. Murphy will reside in the City of Mexico for a time. Mr. Murphy carried considerable life insurance and owned several pieces of property. He was an expert mining engineer, 43 years old.
