from The Republican (Danville, Indiana)--issue of Thursday, December 18, 1902—page 1, column 5:

PIONEER GONE
Last of A Stalwart Family Crosses The River

Andrew Nichols, one of the pioneers of the county, died late Friday evening at his home two miles west of this city of apoplexy, with which he was stricken three days before.

Mr. Nichols was a son of the late James Nichols and was born near Bardstown, Ky., Dec. 27, 1815, making him 86 years, 11 months and 14 days old at his death.

He removed with his parents and the other children, among whom were the late Col. Thomas Nichols and James Nichols, to this state in 1821. In 1822, the family came to this county. The deceased entered the farm on which he died.

Mr. Nichols's wife died nearly twenty years ago. He was the father of fourteen children, five of whom—George and Mrs. Rachel Nichols, of Anderson; and Charles, James and Mrs. Anna Hastings, of this county—survive.

The funeral was held at the home Sunday afternoon at 1 o'clock. The interment was at Mill Creek.

Mr. Nichols was the last of his father's family of eight children whose average age was seventy-five and one-third years.
