Obituary for James Atlee Phillips

MOORESVILLE--James Atlee Phillips, 69, of Mooresville, died Feb. 28, 1996, at Plainfield Health Care Center. He had been a resident there for two years.

Phillips was born April 8, 1926, in West Newton, Ind., to Everett Guynn and Opal Jane (Atkinson) Phillips. He married Rachel M. Sawyers Feb 11, 1949. She survives.

Phillips worked for Hanna Chevrolet in Plainfield for 14 years, retiring in 1987. Previously, he worked at Bob Taylor Chevrolet in Mooresville for seven years, and Vestal Motors in Mooresville for 20 years. He attended Mooresville Friends Meeting. Phillips was a member of Mooresville Masonic Lodge and the Brooklyn Order of Eastern Star. He was a member of the Mooresville American Legion. Phillips was a World War II U.S. Navy veteran.

Survivors include his wife; one son, Chad E. Phillips of Mooresville; one daughter, Anna R. Warfield of Mooresville; two brothers, Thomas Phillips of Tampa, Fla; Harry Phillips of Longview, Texas; three sisters, Lois Hoffman, Bette Kudla and Margaret Corya, all of Mooresville; and two grandchildren.

Services were March 2 at Carlisle and Son Funeral Chaple in Mooresville with the Rev. Dan Smetzer officiating.

Burial was at Maple Hill Cemetery in Plainfield.
