Joseph Phillips, Fayetteville, N.C.

Retired Sgt. Maj. Joseph Eugene Phillips, 64, Fayetteville, N.C. (formerly of the rural Plainfield area) died Sept. 28 in Denver, Colo. He was the son of Everett G. and Opal Jane Atkinson Phillips and was married to Betty Jo Phillips, who survives him.

He was a member of the Special Forces Decade Association, the Ranger Association and the VFW.

Survivors include his wife; sons, Toby Phillips and Joe Phillips, both of Fayetteville, N.C.; daughter, Jackie Kempton of Holden Beach, N.C.; brothers Harry Phillips of Long View, Texas, Jim Phillips of Mooresville, Tom Phillips of Tampa, Fla.; sisters, Lois Hoffman, Betty Kudla and Margaret Corya, all of Mooresville; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

The funeral was conducted Oct. 3, at Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home Chapel officiated by Chaplain Dickson Brown. Burial was in Cumberland Memorial Gardens with full military honors.
