DOUBLE RITES FOR R. M. PHILLIPS, WIFE

Double rites for Mr. and Mrs. Raleigh M. Phillips, 4969 W. 15th St. auto accident victims, will be held at 2 p.m. tomorrow, in the Conkle West 16th Street Funeral Home. The Speedway Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, of which Mrs. Willameta Phillips was a member, will conduct services for her at the mortuary. Graveside services for Mr. Phillips will be conducted by the Speedway Masonic Lodge, of which he was a charter member. They will be buried side be side at Lizton. Returning Sunday from a visit to their farm near Mott, N.D. Mr Phillips apparently suffered a heart attack, and the car crashed into a lake in South Dakota. Both Mr. and Mrs. Phillips were born in Hendricks County and had lived in Indianapolis 30 years. He was 67 and she 69. They would have observed their 45th wedding anniversary January 3. Before his retirement three years ago, Mr. Phillips was an agent for the Aetna Casualty and Surety Co. Both were active members of the Speedway Christian Church, and he served as a deacon and member of the board. He was also a member of the Speedway Order of the Eastern Star and was past master of the Jamestown Masonic Lodge. Mr. and Mrs. Phillips had no children of their own, but had adopted two nieces and a nephew, Mrs. Esta Thompson, Indianapolis, Mrs. Mary Lottes, Lebanon, and Emerald Shockency, Arlington. Also surviving are Mr. Phillips's two sisters, Mrs. Grace Neal, Mooresville, and Mrs. Edna Arnold, Jeffersonville, his brother, Herbert Phillips, Danville; Mrs. Phillips's brother, Charles Rutledge, Danville, seven foster grandchildren and two foster great-grandchildren.

Indianapolis Couple Killed, Auto Plunges Into South Dakota Lake

A retired Indianapolis Insurance agent and his wife, both 68 years old, died yesterday when their automobile skidded on oily pavement, crashed though a guard rail and lunged into a South Dakota lake. Relatives here of Raleigh M. Phillips and his wife Pearl, said they were returning to Indianapolis from their wheat farm near Mott, S.D. where they had been going each year. Mr. and Mrs. Phillips lived at 4969 West 15th Street. South Dakota state police said Phillips was dead when the car, not completely submerged, was pulled from the lake. They theorized he was stricken by a heart attack, lost control of the vehicle. Mrs. Phillips died of injuries a few hours later in a Flandreau (S.D.) hospital. An agent of the Aetna Insurance Company many years, Mr. Phillips retired several years ago. Both he and his wife were born on farms in Hendricks County and lived in the Indianapolis area about 15 years. Both were members if the Speedway Christian Church and the Speedway Chapter, Order of Eastern Star. Mr. Phillips was a member of the Speedway Masonic Lodge and a past master of the Jamestown Masonic Lodge. Relatives left last night by plane to make arrangements for returning the couple's bodies here for funeral services and burial. Survivors include two foster daughters, Mrs. Esta Thorpe, Indianapolis, and Mrs. Mary Lottes, Lebanon; a foster son, Emerald Shockency, Arlington, two sisters of Mr. Phillips, Mrs. Grace Neal, Mooresville, and Mrs. Edna Arnold, Jeffersonville; his brother, Herbert Phillips, Danville; Mrs. Phillips brother, Charles Rutledge, Danville; seven foster grandchildren; two foster great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
