Obituary for Washington Phillips

from The Newton Press (Newton, Illinois)--issue of October 31, 1888:

Washington Phillips died at his residence, 3 miles south of Newton, October 23, 1888, aged 59 years, 5 mo., and 18 days. Bro. Phillips was formerly from (Iowa); has resided in Jasper County the past six years. He embraced the christian religion about 25 years ago, and was a consistent member of the Methodist church until about one year ago when he made a public confession of his faith in Christ and was buried in baptism, and thence cast his lot with the Christian church, at the Christian Chapel, 4 miles north of Newton, with whom he remained faithful until his death. Brother Phillips leaves an aged companion, five sons and two daughters to mourn his death. The funeral service was conducted by the writer, on the 24th inst., at the chapel, after which the remains were gently laid to rest in the beautiful cemetery adjoining the chapel. Chas. Yelton
