Obituary for Howard L. Prewitt

from The Republican (Danville, Indiana)--issue of Thursday, September 28, 1905—page 1, column 6:

HOWARD L. PREWITT
Son of Hendricks County Passes to Long Home

Howard L. Prewitt died at noon, Monday, at his home in Martinsville after an illness of fourteen days from endocarditis complicated with basilar meningitis.

He was born in Hendricks county July 18, 1853, and previous to locating in Martinsville traveled for the Cooper shoe house of Indianapolis. In 1880 he located in Martinsville in the shoe business and was very successful. He was treasurer and trustee of the Masonic lodge and for years was a member of the official board of the Methodist church. October 28, 1886, he and Miss Anna Shirley were married. They had no children. The immediate family that survives is his widow; his mother, Mrs. Catherine Prewitt; three sisters, Miss Emma Prewitt, Mrs. Sarah Veatch, Mrs. E.E. York; three brothers, T.A. Prewitt, J.E. Prewitt and Sydney Prewitt. The funeral services were yesterday afternoon. The Martinsville Republican says editorially:

“In the death of Howard L. Prewitt Martinsville and Morgan county have lost one of their foremost and best citizens. He had convictions on all subjects of public interest and his convictions were for the best interest of the community; and he had the courage of his convictions, always. He was one of the foremost church workers, a leading member of the Masonic fraternity and favored the improvement of conditions in all things with which he had to do. He had been in business here for many years and was always fair with his competitors and trustworthy with his patrons. It would be a fitting recognition of the high business standard he has set in the community for all business houses to close their doors during the time of his funeral. This matter should not be the result of an agreement among business men but should come as the fraternal feeling among merchants one for another and the feeling that the Republican is confident all the merchants have for Mr. Prewitt.”
