Obituary for David Scotten

from The Republican (Danville, Indiana)--issue of Thursday, January 21, 1904—page 4, column 2:

HAZLEWOOD [sic]

David Scotten died January 12. He was born in North Carolina in 1835. He was the second child of a family of twelve born to Jesse Scotten, six of whom survive him. He was a member of the Friends church. He was married to Emeline Stout April 2, 1857. To them were born six children four of whom are living. He served three years in the war for the Union in the 99th Indiana under Captains Worrell, of Clayton, and Thomas, of Danville. The former has said since Mr. Scotten's death that he was the best soldier he ever saw, always in a good humor and always ready for duty. He had been afflicted with asthma for twenty years. Funeral services were conducted at the home by Rev. Hoggin, of the Friends church Thursday morning with interment at Stilesville.
