Obituary for Henry E. Sherlock

from The Republican (Danville, Indiana)--issue of Thursday, May 5, 1910—page 1, column 5:

ENDED LIFE
Aged Man Commits Suicide Sunday Morning at Home of Son

Early Sunday morning, the lifeless body of Henry E. Sherlock was found hanging from the limb of a cherry tree on the farm of his son, John W. Sherlock, who owns part of what was the Simeon Tinder farm northwest of town.

Henry E. Sherlock was in his 87th year and in the last few years his mind had been failing. He arose early Sunday morning and going into [the] yard, he fastened a piece of rope about his neck. To this rope he fastened some strands of binder twine. He apparently climbed into the tree and twisted the ends of the twine around a limb and then slid off.

His son, John Sherlock, had gone to the barn to do the morning's work. Mrs. Sherlock's cousin, James Briggs, who lives with them had been out about the house and had gone to the cellar to look after an incubator. Mrs. Sherlock was the last to arise and she saw the body hanging in the tree. They took it immediately to the house but life was extinct. Coroner Allred was called and his finding is in accord with these facts.

The body was taken to Madison for burial, Sherlock having lived there many years. He was a German and came to this country years ago in a sailing vessel, being over six months on the voyage, his wife dying on the ship. The family had lived at their present home since in March.
