FIVE MEET DEATH AS AUTO CRASHES INTO TRAIN

With the death of Robert Wiley, 19, at the Robert Long hospital, Monday the toll of an accident Saturday night at the old C.H. & D. crossing on the Plainfield-Brownsburg road was raised to five. The others killed were Meredith Smock, 23, Whitestown, driver of the automobile, Miss Fern Haulk, 18, Mrs. Violett Everett, 22, and Miss Phyllis Smith, 17, all of Brownsburg. Mrs. Everett is the wife of Pvt. Robert Everett who is in the Army overseas.

The car crashed into the side of a freight train at the crossing killing four of its five occupants outright. The five had been to a dance at Hardscrabble on U.S. 36 east of Danville. It was the worst traffic accident in this vicinity since four persons met death at the Clark's Creek bridge on the old National road paving east of Plainfield several years ago.

Submitter's Note: Phyllis Smith was the daughter of Riley E. and Ruth Mae (Phillips) Smith.
