Obituary for Rebecca (Kendall) Smith

from The Republican (Danville, Hendricks County, Indiana)--issue of Thursday, April 25, 1901--page 1, column 6:

Mrs. Rebecca Kendall Smith a pioneer died at her home at Reno Thursday from the effect of breaking her hip by a fall a week previously. The funeral was Saturday from the home of her daughter, Mrs. Nancy Christy, the services being conducted by Rev. Grimes, of Indianapolis, the burial being at the Ragan cemetery at New Winchester. Mrs. Smith was in her eighty-ninth year, being born in Kentucky January 15, 1813. In 1815 her parents came to Floyd county, Indiana, and later to Putnam county, settling where Greencastle now stands. September 15, 1838 she and Jeremiah Smith were married and in October of the same year, they located in the western edge of Hendricks county where her home has since been. To them were born nine children, five of whom are living—Mrs. Nancy Christie, of Reno, Rev. L.C. Smith, of Delphi, Mrs. M.E. Grimes, of Massena, Iowa, F.M. Smith, of Corydon, Iowa, and Mrs. M.C. Masten of Danville. Her husband died March 23, 1876. Mrs. Smith joined the Methodist church when she was thirteen years of age and for seventy-five years had been a consistent member. She was indeed a good woman who has gone to her reward.
