Obituary for Abby (Garner) Spicklemire

from The Republican (Danville, Hendricks County, Indiana)--issue of December 17, 1896--page 4, column 3

Abby Garner was born in Bath county, Ky., January 13, 1826, and departed this life at her home in Pittsboro, Ind., December 13, 1896, aged 70 years and 11 months. She moved to Hendricks county, Ind., when a small child and was married to Nelson Spicklemire, Sept. 30, 1847. She with her husband, united with the Baptist church about the year 1850 and since that time has lived a consistent and faithful member. She was the mother of four children, two boys and two girls, three of whom preceded her to the Heavenly land. Her only living child, David J., is living in the old homestead in Pittsboro.

On the eighth of last May, her beloved husband, Nelson Spicklemire, passed from death unto life, and now in a few days over seven months, she goes to join the partner of all her earthly joys and sorrows in a land where pain and sorrow never comes.

Several months ago Mrs. Spicklemire fell and fractured her hip and most of the time since then, she had been compelled to spend in bed, waited on by kind and loving hands, and all that medical skill could do was done to prolong her life, but her advanced age made it only a question of time when she would leave us to join her husband and children.

The funeral services were held in the Baptist church at Pittsboro. Elder W.M. Benson, the pastor, preaching the discourse, on Monday morning, December 14, 1897. The remains were interred in the White Lick cemetery, along side of her late husband, followed by a large number of relatives and friends.

Aunt Abby was a loving wife and all our people mourn with her children, David and Jane, her departure.
