Obituary for Carrie Ethel (Miller) Starr

Once again the Dark Angel of Death has entered our midst and borne from among us our dearly beloved mother. Carrie Ethel Miller was born January 5th, 1890, and departed this earthly life Saturday afternoon, March 28, 1942, at the home of her daughter Avis M. Barrow, where she had been taken just a few weeks previous from the Greencastle hospital, where she was taken after a fall which resulted in a broken hip, from which she never recovered. Her illness was of long duration and her suffering intense. Everything was done for her that medical skill, and loving children could do, but of no avail. The last hour had come, and human power must surrender to the Divine Will of God.

She was the only child of Joel L. and Emma Miller. Born, reared, and educated in Stilesville.

One June 8th, 1907, she was united in marriage to Otis J. Starr. To this union were born seven children, namely, Clara Christine Costin, Avis M. Barrow, Emore [Emory, “Bud”] Allen Starr, Dorothy Irene Wills, Charles Edwin Starr, James Lowell Starr and Maurice Eugene [“Cookie”] Starr.

In early life before Maurice Eugene was born she was bereft of her husband, and for a time lived with her father and mother in Stilesville. Then it was decided to build a home on her father's farm for her and her family, where her children were reared and grew to womanhood and manhood. She joined the Stilesville Baptist church in early life. Carrie has completed her faithful labors here in ministry to the call of want, and the piteous call of sorrow, and as a recompense has received the welcome plaudit, "well done," from the Great Master, who doeth all things well.

She leaves to mourn her loss her seven children. Two of her sons being in U. S. Service, and five grand children.

We can do nothing more for her, but to hold her near and sacred in our memories, and to do for each, some of the kind things that she would have done had she been spared. Many are saying of her today, "She was my friend." Let us try to live so that we may have the same just tribute when we, too, are cold and still. We are not parting forever.

And when in life's late afternoon,
We walk to meet the night that soon
Shall shape and shadow overflow,
We cannot feel that thou art far,
Since near, at need, the Angels are;
And when the sunset gates unbar;
Shall we not see thee waiting stand,
And see against the evening star
The welcome of thy beckoning hand?
