Obituary for John Thompson

from The Republican (Danville, Indiana)--issue of Thursday, July 31, 1902—page 1, column 6:

John Thompson, long a resident here, died Tuesday morning in his seventy-first year. He was born in Randolph county, North Carolina, March 20, 1832, and came to Indiana with his parents when he was seven years old. He grew to manhood on the Henry Pierson farm west of town. He was married to Melissa A. Richardson, Sept. 27, 1860. To this union three children were born—Albert M., of Lizton; Jasper W., of Danville; the third dying in infancy. The wife of his youth departed this life May 11, 1883. He married Martha M. Riddle, June 7, 1886, who, with the two sons, survive.

Mr. Thompson was a consistent member of the Methodist church. It can truly be said of him that an honest man has gone to his long rest. He was industrious and a useful citizen in this community, where he will be very much missed. The funeral was yesterday afternoon from his late home, the services being conducted by Rev. Daugherty. Interment was in the Christy cemetery south of town.
