from The Republican (Danville, Hendricks County, Indiana)--issue of Thursday, May 2, 1901--page 1, columns 3-4:

[Pittsboro items]

Lewis Thornbrough died at his home Friday evening, aged ninety-one years, three months and twenty days. He was born near Richmond, Wayne county, Indiana, January 7, 1810, and he has been a resident of Hendricks county over sixty years. As he as born in Indiana Territory years before the state was admitted to the Union, evidently he was one of the oldest native-born citizens. He moved to Marion county when a young man, and married Miss Anna Schenck, near Bridgeport. Five children of this union are living—Mrs. Alfred Mackey, of Indianapolis, Mrs. David Montgomery, Mrs. Wes Smith, and Mrs. Benjamin Griffith, of Pittsboro; and Samuel Thornbrough, of Danville, Ill. His second wife was Mrs. Fanny Nash, the mother of Dr. George Nash, of Indianapolis. One sons of this union is living—Albert Thornbrough, of this place. His third wife was the widow of Adam Spicklemire, one of the first settlers of this township, and one of the charter members of the old White Lick Regular Baptist church, of which Mr. Thornbro [sic] was a member until his death. His present and fourth wife was Mrs. Hannah Stevens, whom he married twenty years ago. Besides the six children named, he has twenty grandchildren, thirty-four great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. He is the last of a family of sixteen children. His brother, John Thornbrough, late of Bridgeport, was killed by the cars a few years ago near the insane hospital. “Uncle Lewis Thornbrough,” as he was familiarly called, was a prominent member of the White Lick Regular Baptist church for years, and his old dwelling house on his farm east of town, one of the fine old log houses built by the old pioneers, is still standing, and is a landmark. It is two stories high. Mr. Thornbrough retired from active farm life several years ago and bought a home in this place where he died. The funeral was preached at the Baptist church Sunday afternoon by Rev. Williams. The remains were laid to rest in the McDaniel cemetery.
