Obituary for William W. West

from The Republican (Danville, Indiana)--issue of Thursday, October 31, 1912—page 1, column 3:

ENDED LIFE

Wm. W. West, a bachelor, 42 years old, committed suicide yesterday afternoon at the home of his sister, Mrs. Albert Mitchell on North Jefferson street, by taking carbolic acid. He called for a glass, saying he wanted to take some medicine, and drank the poison dying in five minutes. Illness and despondency are assigned as the cause. A few months ago, he disposed of his interest in a farm near Lizton and went to Indianapolis and invested in a grocery. The venture was a failure and West lost everything he had.

It is thought he walked out from Indianapolis yesterday. Not a cent was found in his pockets. He had been ill for some weeks and the physician had told him he was threatened with consumption. He left a note for Mr. Mitchell, telling him to go to the grocery, Monday, and get some money that would be paid in and give it to his mother and that his clothing would be found at a boarding house north of the grocery. The funeral is tomorrow afternoon.
