Obituary for Wilbur Winnings

from The Republican (Danville, Indiana)--issue of Thursday, October 30, 1902—page 1, column 5:

A Sad Death

Wilbur Winnings, son of Ida. M. and the late Archibald Winnings, died Friday evening, of diphtheria aged eighteen years and thirteen days. The interment was Sunday in the south cemetery at Danville, Rev. C.W. Stewart making brief remarks at the grave. Wilbur was the only son of a widowed mother and the sympathy of the entire community goes out to her, in her irreparable loss. When the husband and father died three years ago, Wilbur stepped in and took up a man's work, he and his mother living happily together on the farm east of Danville. Indeed because of his fidelity he contracted the disease which ended his life. His mother had diphtheria and Wilbur was her nurse for two weeks. She had only just recovered when he was stricken and she in turn had to nurse him. Just entering into manhood his death is unusually sad.
