MARRIAGE CERTIFICATES

The official who peformed the marriage would give the couple a marriage certificate to keep for their own records (if you're lucky, they were retained by the family and passed down through the generations). The marriage certificate would often include information that the marriage license did not require, such as the names and signatures of the witnesses and where the marriage actually took place. There was also a part at the bottom of the certificate that was to be filled out by the official and returned to the courthouse as proof of the marriage - called a "return".

MARRIAGE LICENSES

Before 1882, Indiana law only required a marriage license to record the names of the two parties, the name of the marriage official, and the date the marriage was performed.

MARRIAGE AFFIDAVITS

In the 1800's, if one of the parties was underage or appeared to be underage, Indiana law required an adult to file an affidavit either giving consent to the marriage or affirming that the party was of age. These marriage affidavits were kept in a separate book from the marriage licenses.

MARRIAGE SUPPLEMENTS

Beginning in 1882, Indiana law required supplemental marriage information to be recorded, such as the names of the parents and the age of the bride and groom at their next birthday. This supplemental information was recorded in a separate book from the marriage licenses.

MARRIAGE APPLICATIONS

Beginning in April 1905, Indiana law required a marriage application to be filled out before a marriage license could be issued. In Hendricks County, these marriage applications were recorded in a separate set of books from the marriage licenses from May 1905 through May 1950. Then beginning in May 1950, the marriage applications were recorded in the same set of books as the marriage licenses.
