Land in Indiana was surveyed using the rectangular survey system, which measured land in a grid system (Congressional Townships and Ranges) from a reference point in Paoli, Orange County, Indiana (Congressional Townships in Hendricks County explained). Indiana land was originally sold to the public by the federal government, through General Land Offices in various districts - Crawfordsville was the nearest GLO district office to Hendricks County. After the federal government sold all the available land, the original purchasers then sold it to other residents, often in smaller pieces.
Deed books record the purchase or sale of a piece of land. They include the names of the buyer and the seller and a legal description of a land, as well as the date this deed was recorded (which is not always the same as the date on the deed).
Grantee and grantor books record the names of the grantee (buyer) and grantor (seller) of a piece of land and the volume and page number of the Deed Book that transaction can be found on. They act as an index to the deed books.
Townships in Hendricks County Deed Transfers Book - Grantors (1850-1859)
This PDF file is an inventory of the townships that are listed in a Hendricks County deed transfers book for grantors (sellers) from 1850 to 1859. It is meant to be a finding aid to the deed transfers book for grantors that is available online at the Hendricks County government's website. For example, if you wanted to look for a transfer that occurred in Brown Township, you could look at the inventory to see what image numbers in the digital file of that deed transfers book correspond to the Brown Township section.
Entry books kept by the Hendricks County Recorder contain a summary of each deed that was recorded in the Deed Books. The Deed Books themselves have more information that what is in these entry books.
Property records cards are large index cards kept by the Hendricks County Auditor that contain a listing of who was responsible for paying the property taxes on a piece of land in various towns and townships. These cards are organized not by the owner's name, but by the location of the piece of land.
A plat book (which contains plat maps for specific Sections, Congressional Townships and Ranges) acts as a snapshot of who owned a piece of land in a particular year, and also allows you to see who the landowner's neighbors were. The Hendricks County Assessor has plat books for various townships for scattered years. These plat books have been digitized by the Hendricks County Government.
